PRESIDENT & MASTERMIND

Paul is Carew Co’s founder and a lover of creativity, rad design, and Boise. Lured to Idaho in the 1990s by Oliver Russell, a brand marketing agency, he’s helped shape the community’s advertising, branding, and digital scene since then. He struck out on his own nearly 10 years ago and has built Carew Co into a highly-respected Northwest firm. He’s also very active in the community: He’s the founding president of the Idaho chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Artists, an adjunct professor, and a board member for the Better Business Bureau. Paul also owns Wear Boise, located downtown, with his superhero wife, Lisa.

HOMETOWN
I grew up in York, Pennsylvania, home of the York Peppermint Patty, the original Harley Davidson factory, and our nation’s first capital.

UNIVERSITY
I have a BFA in graphic design from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia.

JOB TITLE
President, I guess? My role(s) include directing our creative work, managing client relations, projecting our workload, and new business development. I sometimes order office supplies and answer the phone.

AFFILIATIONS
AIGA Idaho (founding president); BBB Snake River Region (executive board member); Boise State (adjunct professor); Boise (Idaho lover and good citizen).

OFFICE NICKNAME
I am sometimes called “Pauly” (pronounced with an accent a la Rocky — “Eh, yo, Pawwy!

FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT CAREW CO
That I look forward to coming to work every day. There is always the excitement of a fast pace, diversity in the type of work we do, and time spend with the clients that we love. I still have to pinch myself that I get paid to do what I love to do.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR WORK?
I am proud of our team and the awesome people I get to work with. Being able to collaborate with our creative mindshare is what gets me out of bed in the morning.

GUILTY PLEASURES
I love coffee. It is my lifeblood. And, it helps that our office is next to a coffee shop! I’m a sucker for new technology. I’m an early adopter…sometimes too early. I love wine and beer (especially the brands we help to create!).

STATE OF LIVING QUARTERS
I have two housemates — my beautiful wife, Lisa, and our demanding, crazy, diabetic cat, Kitty. Also, they aren’t “housemates,” but we also typically have a few boxes of inventory from our retail brand, Wear Boise.

ON THE WEEKENDS
I don’t think I’ve had a free weekend since I started my business. My list is pretty simple — sleep in as long as possible, eat great food, enjoy a nice cocktail, and celebrate the beauty of this life and time we are in with my wife!

SECRET TALENT
I have been known to breakdance every now and again (but that is a rare occurrence as I get older and more creaky).
